What’s Causing Your Double Chin?

In many occasions you’ll hear people tell you to stand tall and keep your chin up. In other ones that can be hard when you think you have a double chin. In that case you want to make sure that people steer clear of anything that might attract their attention to you. Before we get too deeply into this article let us preface with the fact that having a double chin does not mean you have poor health. The big problem with them is that people often find them unsettling and unattractive. It can cause them to lose the confidence they once had in themselves.

A double chin can often sneak up on someone and they don’t really have an idea what causes it. This is called submental fat and it’s usually when people have fatty tissue under their lower jaw. According to Wasatch Peak Family Practice, there are a couple of explanations of as to why you may have a double chin.

One of the causes can be excess fat. When you gain weight, you will usually see at accumulating in areas all around the body. Unfortunately this also does mean areas like your face and even chin. Things like genetics will play a big part here. When yo have a specific body type and it accumulates fat a certain way, you can find yourself gaining the weight in that area specifically. Not only that but if your family has a history of double chins then it is more likely that you can get it as well.

Another big contender is aging! This is often overlooked but it has a major effect on our skin. Sadly, the big part that aging has on our skin is natural and can’t always be stopped. As we get older the amount of collagen we produce decreases. This then causes our skin to lose elasticity and sag. Not only may you get a double chin but you can also see some wrinkles form. Since this is such a natural process, there are many factors that lay a part in how fast it happens. One of them is poor diet and even environmental exposure.

When you were younger you’ve probably heard your parents talk about your posture. This isn’t taken very seriously because there are many times that we just want to relax our bodies instead of make sure it’s always looking a certain way. When it comes to double chins, posture can play a part in how you look. When you hang your neck to look at something or even look at a computer pad, this posture can be bad for the platysma muscle. When it weakens you will see a decrease in elasticity, causing a double chin.

While speaking of the many ways that a double chin can form, it’s also important to talk about how to get rid of them. The first thing you have to do is understand why you have it to begin with! Once you’ve gotten that over with then you can start figuring out how to get rid of it.
